newspaper readability, the readability levels of newspapers ranged from about fifth grade to the college level. These studies (summarized in Table 1) used several different readability formulas on various newspapers throughout the U.S. and the world. Although newspaper readability is generally above the fifth grade level, the research indicates, for example, that sports articles are easier to read than those dealing with world news or politics (Anderson, 1966). In addition, wire articles (Associated Press, United Press International) tend to be harder to read than nonwire articles (Johns and Wheat, 1978).
