Data sets, descriptive measures, histograms and data patterns

One of the principle purposes of mathematical statistics is to provide tools by which the existence of a "pattern" in a data set may be detected and quantified, or classified. Descriptive statistical measures and graphical tools such as histograms are possibly the most elementary of these pattern recognition tools.
