Origin-Destination and Travel Time Measurement Using Bluetooth Technology: Results and Lessons Learned
K D Parma, Yung Koprowski, Wang Zhang · 2013
As part of arterial roadway operation traffic studies in Arizona and Texas, origin-destination and travel time data was required. To supplement traditional data collection methods, Bluetooth technology was utilized. This technology allowed data to be easily collected and processed for a longer time period than traditional methods. Although the objective of each of the arterial roadway operation traffic studies differed slightly, the data collected were able to provide necessary travel time and origin-destination information. A comparison of floating-vehicle collected travel times with the Bluetooth data was also performed in order to compare results from the two methodologies. This paper provides lessons learned from these applications of the Bluetooth technology and also highlights the benefits and disadvantages of utilizing this technology for these types of studies.
