One Way to Read a Paragraph.

Students may not even realize that a sentence cites an example of something mentioned in the preceding sentence. If the sentence they are reading does not contain an obvious signpost like for example or for instance , they may not recognize its function. And of course many other types of sentence relationships, particularly in expository writing, are more difficult to recognize than the example relationship. As soon as students begin to read connected discourse, they must begin to learn how the sentences are linked togethera whole new set of relationships. This is more complicated than is sometimes realized. There is much more to it than learning a few transition words like however, moreover, and therefore .
