An efficient approach to switching activity estimation in finite state machines
W.W. Bachmann, Sorin Alexander Huss · 1998
This paper presents a methodology for determining the average power consumption of sequential CMOS circuits based on a ‘high-level’ FSM description. Starting from a exercised symbolic FSM description, a Monte Carlo simulation is used to estimate the average switching activity of all circuit components. Depending on user-supplied modelling parameters this simulation system can be used as a ‘circuit level’ simulator as well as a symbolic simulator of ‘high-level’ descriptions. An object-oriented modelling and simulation environment is thus presented that allows an automatic generation of high-speed simulation systems to run in a heterogeneous multiprocessor environment.
