tremBLE: How secure is Bluetooth Low Energy?

Ilia Benson · John Spoor Broome Library Institutional Repository (California State University) · 2019

Bluetooth Low Energy is a leading standard in the emerging market of Internet of Things. It is a relatively new standard that delivers reliable low energy and low data rate communication between electronic devices. This paper will focus on explaining some of the characteristics of the standard and its general lack of security concerns. BLE is significantly younger than its sister standards (WiFi and Bluetooth Classic) and its direct competitors (Zwave and ZigBee) and thus has had much less time to mature and mitigate some of the attack and detection tools that have already been created. Many attack vectors and tools that are readily available for BLE far exceed the standard's current ability to handle, in most cases, as this paper will demonstrate. This paper will present a background section on BLE, attacks and attack vectors of BLE enabled devices and proposed countermeasures.
