In the era of multimedia applications and the Internet of things, large bandwidth (a limited resource) is required for exchange of data to control various devices over the Internet and hence data compression is highly desirable. During compression, various artifacts may occur. This chapter focuses on an efficient technique of artifact detection. Blocking artifacts are predominantly visible during the process of block discrete cosine trans-form–based compression and this is the main cause of image degradation. A method to detect these unwanted effects without the removal of intuitive features of an image has been presented in this chapter. In the proposed work, a modified model based on the assumption of the large variation of pixel values of adjacent pixels across the block boundary in comparison to pixels away from the boundary is designed. The experimental results show 174 that the proposed method outperforms while detecting blocking artifacts as compared to other postprocessing methods.
