Introduction to Technologies and Standards for Critical Communications
Mehmet Ulema · 2018
This chapter provides an overview of the technologies, protocols, and related standards used in building and operating critical communications systems. Many Private Mobile Radio (PMR) systems allow Direct Mode Operation (DMO), in which terminals can communicate with one another directly when they are out of the coverage area of the network. In the communications and networking field, the term broadband refers to a communications technology that uses a relatively larger bandwidth, thus offering relatively higher data rates. LTE (and LTE-A) is an attractive broadband technology for building next generation critical communications systems, compared to others. The WiMAX technology specified in Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers (IEEE) 802.16 also provides wide area broadband communications with similar broadband capabilities as LTE technology. The Bluetooth technology specified in IEEE 802.15 can be used by agents in the field to provide wireless voice communication between headsets and terminal devices.
