Since the Internet has insufficient addresses to support Internet of Thing, Named Data Networking (NDN) is an eminent realization of the vision of Information-Centric Networking to address the challenges. The NDN architecture utilizes location-independent data retrieval and name-based routing. Among multitudinous features, the NDN integrates security mechanisms and focuses on protecting the content. The characteristics of the NDN attract new network attacks such as Interest Flooding Attacks (IFAs). In this paper, the structure and operations of the NDN have been introduced. The security issues of the NDN have been discussed with a survey of various IFAs and their countermeasures. The survey includes a detailed comparative study of the commonly proposed solutions against IFAs. Finally, we offer an analysis of the future research directions regarding IFAs in this paper.
