In the introduction to his classic work, The psychology and pedagogy o f reading, Huey (1908) tells a story of the explorer Livingstone exciting wonder and awe in an African tribe who watched him daily perusing a book that had survived the rigours of his journey. Eventually the natives, intent on sharing in the mysteries of reading, captured Livingstone’s book and ate it. Thus, perhaps, was born the first information processing model of reading.
