Improved Matching of Cybersecurity Professionals’ Skills to Job-Related Competencies: An Exploratory Study

Despite the documented shortage of cybersecurity professionals, there is scant rigorous evidence to inform managers and organizations on the most effective ways to assess candidate original contribution to knowledge was to begin addressing this knowledge gap by conducting a Delphi design study and to assay the consensus of a panel of experts in the State of Hawai’i using unstructured, open-ended interviews and two rounds of online surveys were used to investigate how hiring managers evaluated cybersecurity candidates for job openings. Cybersecurity expert practitioners were recruited from the Information Systems Security Association Hawai’i chapter. During the interviews peer reviewed/pilot tested questions were presented to the panel experts, designed to ascertain the qualities and practices that were deemed sufficient and which methods if any, could be improved. The researcher analyzed expert narrative using a structured qualitative method and thematic analysis and documented the expert’s reasoned opinions. The findings revealed the cybersecurity qualities, assessment techniques, and practices that can help to efficaciously assess candidates.
