Smart meeting rooms now incorporate several innovative speech and language applications. Identifying optimal hardware for enabling these applications continues to be a challenge even today. Many factors such as background noise, microphone placement, furniture and equipment in meeting rooms impact the effectiveness of the speech and language applications. In this paper we recommend and assess a novel linear 8-microphone array placement at the interactive whiteboard via speaker data captured at various points in the meeting room. Results are generated by using a speech recognition algorithm which indicate if the microphone array used is capable to capture far-field audio resulting in a high enough accuracy. Our results indicate a high enough ASR accuracy range (between 75%-90%) is possible by placing the linear microphone array at the interactive whiteboard.
