Data breaches are becoming an ever increasingly large threat as reliance on telecommunication devices and services increase. Personally Identifiable Data (PII) is collected by nearly every public facing company and even some that are not publicly interfaced, drastically increasing the rate of data breach incidents. Emergent technologies such as cloud hosting increases the risks involved as it opens the doors for attacks to happen remotely. PII along with metadata that relates every user's actions together pose a threat to the end user if the collecting company does not do their due diligence to secure themselves against the onslaught of threats that exist on the open Internet. This paper aims to discuss the construction of your average data breach and paint a picture of what is at stake if things continue as they are now, and outline ways to mitigate this bleak future.
