Traditional networks, despite of its popularity adopted network schemas which are difficult to maintain and manage. Software-defined networking (SDN) is an emerging trend which separates the control plane and data plane in the network. SDN has gained attention of researchers due to its ability to easily scale, extend, and dynamically add network functions. The dynamic capabilities of SDN have brought about a significant change in the way networks were implemented. To make SDN-based networks more reliable and stable, significant effort from researchers’ is required. In this chapter, the attention is given to security concerns in SDN networks, especially DDoS attacks. Distributed denial of service (DDoS) attack is one of the serious security attacks which make a resource unavailable to its legitimate users by flooding or consuming entire network bandwidth. The survey highlights Fog computing as an additional layer for reducing latency between the perception layer and cloud as well as to address the security concerns such as detecting DDoS attacks. Fog computing layer leverages SDN controller to gather traffic data, detect DDoS attacks, and mitigate the same. The review is helpful in understanding how SDN can be used in Fog Computing layer to suppress DDoS attacks.
