Machine Learning and Deep Learning Are Crucial to the Existence of IoT and Big Data

Machine Learning (ML) and Deep Learning (DL) techniques have been playing a significant role in identifying intrinsic patterns in data. ML and DL techniques can learn from existing data and make intelligent decisions about unseen data. These techniques are considered data-hungry approaches because they require a huge amount of data for training their models to demonstrate enhanced performance. The Internet of Things (IoT) provides active connectivity to billions of devices over the internet where IoT systems continuously collect and communicate a huge amount of information without human involvement. This data is stored on the cloud for advanced analytics where the role of ML and DL come into play to enhance the intelligence and smartness of IoT based applications. This chapter provides an overview of IoT, its architecture, and its features. It also discusses the significance of ML/DL techniques in the realm of the IoT and the cloud. Finally, some widespread applications of the IoT are presented.
