Data in R

Speegle Darrin, Clair Bryan · 2021

This chapter gives students enough familiarity with base R to begin working with data. It does not assume prior programming experience. Beginning with arithmetic computations, the chapter introduces variables and assignment, vectors and an assortment of useful base R functions. Data frame manipulation uses variable selection ( $ ) and indexing with brackets, including selection of observations with comparison operations. Students learn to read data from files and to install and use packages. The fosdata package containing data for this textbook is introduced as well. Students will learn to use R&s;s built in help capabilities and respond to errors and warnings. A vignette describes some of the worldwide communities that support R users and data science in general. In classes taught from this book we recommend that students complete their class work by creating R Markdown documents, so the chapter concludes with a brief how-to.
