This article will discuss the role of realism in survey and design. In order to ground our discussion on solid findings, a formal theoretical model will be used to study how representations actually depict reality and how they relate to the mental images they create. We could take as our guiding light the famous phrase by Alfred Korzybski, "Map is not the territory" so often cited by Bateson.
