Standards and Protocols

The chapter discusses protocols for different layers of a Transmission Control Protocol (TCP)/Internet Protocol (IP) model. The protocol is a set of precise and unambiguous rules so that different devices in the networks communicate seamlessly. There are two broad types of protocols, namely, short-range (IEEE 802.11 and IEEE 802.15.4) and Long Range Wide Area Networks (LoRaWAN) protocols. The IEEE 802.11 protocol is widely used in an indoor environment for Wireless Local Area Networks (WLAN) applications. The IEEE 802.15.4 protocol is suitable for an interference-prone environment. The adaptive data rate is a key to LoRaWAN protocol for a harsh and/or large network. Further, IPv6 over Low-Power Wireless Personal Area Networks (6LoWPAN) and application layer protocols are also presented. Notably, Constrained Application Protocol (CoAP) augments Hypertext Transfer Protocol (HTTP) in an IoT network.
