Components of Function Circuits

Analog function circuits such as multipliers, dividers, multipliers-cum-dividers, square rooters, and vector magnitude circuits are designed with the following components: transistors, field effect transistors (FETs), switches, multiplexers, and operational amplifiers (op-amps). A metal-oxide-semiconductor field effect transistor (MOSFET) is the most widely used electronic device, and complementary metal-oxide-semiconductor (CMOS) technology is the technology of choice in the design of integrated circuits. The components of function circuits are described in this chapter. The current in a transistor is due to flow of both electrons and holes, hence it is called a "bipolar transistor". Transistors are used for both current and voltage amplifications. The operational amplifier (op-amp) is a powerful tool of electronic components and ICs.
