The Chain Procedure for Subject Indexing and Featuring

Bernard I. Palmer, A.J. Wells · 2021

The claim of the classified catalogue is that under any given head it lays out the divisions and subdivisions of a subject in a useful and intelligible order so that once a reader has arrived at the section of the catalogue appropriate to his interest the order of the scheme itself assists him. Thus, the only entry required under agriculture in this case is a general one which will refer the reader to the classified catalogue or to the shelves for a display of all the subjects subsumed under it. Field crops are a subject who comprehends not only potatoes and other root crops, but cereals and forage crops, etc. A full translation, digit-by-digit, gives Agriculture—field crops—root crops—tubers—potatoes. The reader examining entries in the part of the catalogue dealing with field crops will be aware of the agricultural context, and will not, therefore, need to be reminded of it on every entry.
