Electrostatic Engine Monitoring System (EEMS)

Ashley L. Dunn · 1995

Electrostatic engine monitoring has shown to be an effective tool in diagnostic I prognostic health monitoring of gas turbine engines. By detecting the increase in electrostatic activity in the gas path, the EEMS system provides up to 80 - 100 hours early warning of engine failures. The characteristics by these electrostatic pulses are determined of the source generating them, and thus can provide a diagnostic capability. Recent tests conducted by Smiths Industries has demonstrated these capabilities as well as the potential for EEMS to detect and identify debris ingested by the engine. These results coupled with advanced techniques for analysing the engine produced electrostatic waveforms provides promise for the introduction ofEEMS into an on-board health monitoring system.
