This paper surveys the applicability and performance of a variety of algorithms belonging to the Genetic Algorithm (GA) family on maritime engineering problems. Nine different GAs from the state-of-the-art are compared with the original GA. The applications are a yacht layout and a grillage structure. The aim is to understand the GA mechanisms by visualising the behaviour, find appropriate algorithms for common problems in maritime engineering and understand the common characteristics of these applications. Guidance is given on the correct algorithm selection, with cMLSGA outperforming other state-of-the-art algorithms on all the test problems.
