Side-channel attacks are serious threats to symmetric and asymmetric cryptosystems. To counter these attacks, many algorithms and improvements to the cryptosystems have already been made and is still a trending point. Power analysis attacks since their first introduction in 1996 by Kocher et al. have been intensively studied and various new attacks as well as counterattacks have been developed in the last decade. RSA is one the most popular asymmetric cryptosystems. Various types of power analysis attacks as well as some countermeasures either developed or proposed are discussed in our survey. In this paper, we have done an extensive investigation on the Blinding approach specifically, which has been used as a countermeasure for power analysis attacks in RSA cryptosystem for quite a long time. Starting from the very first power analysis attacks and suggested countermeasures, we have gone through the work of many prominent researches in this field to fully understand the strength and flaws of the blinding approach.
