As life sciences are entering in the era of big data , researchers face serious barriers in their computing tasks. Motivated by such issues emerging in the workflows of many ELIXIR-GR partners, we have identified important libraries and software components being bottlenecks in the aforementioned workflows. We propose the adjustment of the current implementations utilizing the latest developments in data management and the adoption of virtualization techniques to overcome their performance issues, when necessary. This plan involves both the development of tailored data-intensive components and the provision of relevant horizontal Cloud services . The architecture of the hardware infrastructure to support the aforementioned software is also discussed.
