Finite and nilpotent strongly verbally closed groups

We show, in particular, that, if a finite group [Formula: see text] is a retract of any finite group containing [Formula: see text] as a verbally closed subgroup, then the centre of [Formula: see text] is a direct factor of [Formula: see text].
