September Why Are Makerspaces Important?
Lacy Brejcha · 2021
Research funded by the National Science Foundation to identify best practices in education showed that students in all types of schools can and do engage in high-quality science, technology, engineering, art, and mathematics using Makerspaces and science, technology, engineering, art, and mathematics (STEAM) programs. The informal knowledge student’s gain by experimenting, observing, and comparing while playing and making sets the stage for learning higher order thinking skills and STEAM concepts. STEAM represents an enormous shift from using standardized test scores, to valuing the learning process. STEM jobs should be highly enticing to American workers, thus making STEAM a necessary component in Makerspaces. Regardless of educational fulfillment, entering a STEM profession is associated with higher earnings and reduced unemployment. STEAM provides an incredible opportunity for teaching how interconnected subjects relate to real life.
