Real Time Edge Computing: An Edge of Automation

Girish R. Talmale, Urmila N. Shrawankar · 2021

The emerging applications in the Internet of Things, Cyber-Physical System, Smart City, Augmented Reality, Autonomous Vehicles, and Industrial Internet are time-critical. The existing cloud computing model is unable to handle these applications due to high computational latency to upload and process data on cloud data centers located across the world. The applications generate huge amounts of information from various sensors and uploading this huge data on cloud data centers also increases network complexity and congestion. Another issue is these applications produce huge amounts of raw data that must be filtered before it gets stored to the cloud. Edge computing is a new computing platform that brings cloud service near to end devices to reduce communication latency for time-critical applications. Edge computing deployment over geographical areas near to end-users enhances performance with real-time computation requirements and data filtrations. However there are several issues in the efficient implementation of edge computing with existing cloud computing framework such as security, reliability, identify the space for deployment of the edge computing server, tasks allocation to edge computing server, data management and aggregation, network utilization. This chapter discusses the various applications, services, technologies, protocols, platforms, and challenges and open research problems in the effective implementation of real-time edge computing in industrial automation as a case study.
