The use of resources in the informational text section requires resource citations in order to make it viable while the literature section is rooted in the use of classic and contemporary literature that is more accessible in various forms. In contrast, the literature standards’ examples are all genre-based literature in short story, poetry, or essay form. Finally, the informational text examples often focus on multiple resources that require students to cross over types of readings and viewings in order to meet the standard. The following examples, which represent appropriate-level activities for typical and advanced students, focus on several aspects of differentiation. The activities for gifted learners are designed to be conducted in a self-contained, pull-out, or inclusive setting with a small group of gifted students in which the activities have been “tiered” with the activity as part of a differentiated classroom.
