The construction of a jetty is a process of planning, design and construction during which many choices must be made and many decisions must be taken. The most crucial decisions are probably those associated with the determination of the wishes and requirements of the owner, because these determine the function functionality and operability of the jetty. Topsides and jetty structure require different expertise and are often executed by different parties. An engineering, procurement and construction contract seeks to link design and construction, giving the contractor the opportunity to integrate his specific construction experience in the design, rather than only in the construction. Criteria are the requirements that can be measured. The type of transhipment depends on the type of materials to be transhipped. The materials and method of transhipment can be roughly divided into the following five categories: liquids, dry bulk goods, containers, ro-ro and various.
