Achieving acceptable graphics quality with modern technology is tricky. Graphics that look good on the computer monitor often will not have good resolution on the printed page. Furthermore, because it is not uncommon for the various stages of the publication process to use different software, strange things can (and do) happen in the metamorphosis from manuscript to published article.
