In most cases rough milling is the longest operation for manufacturing a cavity for a die or mould. Today, commercial CAM software offers a range of tool-path strategies for milling such cavities. However, choosing the tool diameter is a task for the users. It is difficult work because a relatively big tool diameter reduces the milling time but cannot reach all the corners, on the other hand, small tool which can reach all the corners takes more time to mill. The current work presents an algorithm which recognizes the part topography and identifies the best set of tool diameters to milling the cavity.
