Real-Time Video Streaming with Application Layer ARQ in UAV Networks: Field Tests

In this paper, we analyze a cross-layer technique to improve the Quality of Service (QoS) of video streaming with Application Layer Automatic Repeat Request (AL-ARQ) in ad hoc networks composed of Unmanned Aerial Vehicles (UAVs). The technique proposed is designed to cope with burst error and transmission error that occur because of network collision or network interference. We validate our analysis with field experiments by using an ad hoc 802.11n network including a small fixed-wing UAV. The main Quality of Service (QoS) metric measured was packet loss ratio (PLR). Results show that AL-ARQ significantly improves the video streaming quality.
