Collocational frameworks in English

In the close to thirty years since the Brown Corpus was compiled, the number of machine-readable texts has grown enormously. Some texts are published both in printed and in electronic form. Many others exist primarily in machine-readable form and were never intended to be distributed in a printed version, for example electronic journals or computer network messages. Future corpus workers must take care not to restrict themselves to types of texts which are easily available. There are encouraging signs that compilers of new corpora are aware of this, as shown for example in the International Corpus of English project. It is no coincidence that Jan Svartvik has done distinguished work in the areas of both corpora and elicitation. Jan Svartvik and his research team at Lund University have done pioneering work in making spoken Survey material available as the machine-readable London-Lund Corpus, allowing new and sophisticated studies of spoken discourse.
