A Content and Language Integrated Approach
MaryAnn Christison, Denise E. Murray · 2021
Programs that integrate language and content have been used with all types of learners in many different contexts. Content-based instruction (CBI) is an umbrella term used to refer to all types of programs that make a dual commitment to content and language objectives and includes courses taught by content-area specialists and by language teachers with content-area expertise. The terms sheltered instruction and CLIL (content and language integrated learning) are used to reference this type of curriculum in different contexts. There is an extensive body of research from diverse fields that supports this practice. This chapter focuses on the options available for creating this type of curriculum, its strengths and weaknesses, its influence on textbook design, and the types of classroom activities that support the approach. The chapter provides examples of CBI from textbooks and teacher created materials.
