CHARACTERIZING THE PROCESSING UNITS OF READING: Effects of Intra- and Interword Spaces in a Letter Detection Task
B. K. Britton, S. M. Glynn · 2013
According to this model, participants tend to miss letters in familiar words like the and and and in familiar word endings like -ing because they process such items automatically in units larger than single letters (such as syllables, words, or phrases) without completing processing at the letter level (see Johnson, 1981, for a review of alternative models that also postulate a hierarchy of reading units).
