Choosing Cameras and Head-Mounted Displays

John Bowditch, Matt Love · Productivity Press eBooks · 2021

Many different camera configurations are available to capture cinematic virtual reality (cine-VR) content. This chapter explores some of the reasons the readers might choose one over another. It begins with inexpensive and simple to use, then pivots to expensive and more complex. Traditional cinema cameras can capture cine-VR content with impressive results. The VR industry is trending toward wireless as the default option due to consumer demand and ease of use; however, the overall quality will never match the performance of headsets wired to a PC. Wired headsets like the HP Reverb 2 or HTC Vive Pro rely on the PC to manage rendering and other computations. This configuration is advantageous because PC-based processing is significantly better than wireless headsets. Wireless headsets like the Oculus Quest 2 and HTC Focus are growing in popularity. Size, the convenience of use, and not being tethered to a PC are attractive features.
