Remote Diagnostics of Air-Filter Clogging in a Network Equipment

In an air-cooled network equipment, air-filter prevents dust accumulation inside the equipment. Over a period, air-filter gets clogged by dust particles and require periodic replacement to prevent high pressure drop which leads to reduced airflow through the equipment. This reduced airflow increases the operating temperature of the devices, which further requires fans to run faster leading to increased power consumption, louder acoustics noise and reduced reliability. In mobility applications where equipment is installed in remote unattended locations, such preventive replacement of air-filter is a challenge. This paper describes a method to identify the air-filter status remotely and provide proactive indications on how soon the air-filter must be replaced.
