Abstract We develop a theoretical model for entanglement engineering to generate a multipartite system of field states in high-Q cavities using a cavity-QED. Our model consists of two-level atoms interacting successively with the field inside the arbitrary number of high-Q cavities for pre-calculated interaction times of the atoms with the fields. Controlling these pre-calculated interaction times of the atom-field gives the successful generation of the Greenberg–Horne–Zeilinger (GHZ) state and the W-state in N cavities. We also evaluate the dynamics of entanglement of GHZ entangled field states when they interact with the reservoir.
