Frameworks of Prosody
Okim Kang, David O. Johnson, Alyssa Kermad · 2021
Chapter 1 provided a historical overview of prosodic traditions and associated frameworks, demonstrating commonalities and differences in how prosody has been understood and analyzed throughout the years. In the current chapter, we take two frameworks as examples, which are introduced in Section 2.1 . Then, in Section 2.2 , we cover David Brazil’s (1997) framework in more detail as a representative model of the British tradition, and in Section 2.3 , we introduce Janet Pierrehumbert’s (1980) and Pierrehumbert and Hirschberg’s (1990) framework briefly as a representative model of the American tradition. Our description of Brazil’s model has been weighted more heavily in this chapter due to our own interests in pedagogical applications. The prosodic analysis in Chapter 3 is also based on Brazil’s framework.
