Optimizing Software Defect Removal Efficiency (DRE)

Capers Jones · Auerbach Publications eBooks · 2021

Before the corona virus of 2020, software development teams were co-located and often on the same floor of the same buildings, although of course international projects have always occurred. Due to the virus, many teams are now working from home. Worse, design reviews and code inspections were among the most effective of all known quality control techniques and averaged about 85% in defect removal efficiency (DRE) while testing only averages about 30% DRE for each specific test step such as unit test, function test, regression test, etc. Now that the virus is rampant, live meetings are dangerous and with personnel working from home, no longer possible. There is no data as of yet about whether Zoom reviews or inspections are effective. To optimize the DRE, pre-test reviews and inspections have been used successfully since the 1970s. It will probably be 2022 before the effectiveness of Zoom reviews and inspections can be analyzed.
