Wh-Operator vs. Yes/No-Operator

The main purpose of this study is to clarify certain issues on the interpretation of wh-in-situ by examining a set of new data that have not been discussed in generative grammar. In particular, two question particles in Japanese, ndai and nokai, are taken up to show that wh-in-situ embedded in the wh-island must be interpreted therein. Some of the direct theoretical consequences are discussed in some detail and cross-linguistic comparison is made when necessary
