Review on Hardware Attacks and Security Challenges in IoT Edge Nodes

Nagarjuna Telagam, D. Ajitha, Nehru Kandasamy · 2021

The Internet of things will drive the next generation’s electronic era, and the security of semiconductor devices will always be a concern. All smart devices will be connected to user-based applications. The guard on the Internet-of-Things devices has been an important topic for researchers around the world. The implementation of hardware security in IoT nodes or devices has not been taken seriously by researchers until today. Many algorithms, programming software, network security, and cloud computing are all based on software security in IoT. This book chapter reviews hardware attacks, protection algorithms, secure hardware levels, attacks during the manufacturing process, attacks during design and sophisticated attacks. Counterfeiting and debugging security in IoT edge nodes are mostly interlinked with the processing layer in IoT. Hardware-based IoT designs will need a new security architecture, especially in the edge nodes in IoT. The next-generation on-chip devices’ security features are the solution for intrinsic hardware security. Unresolved problems such as trade-off between security and power are also discussed broadly. These problems will affect the design of secured devices in IoT hardware. This chapter is also concerned about IoT-based edge devices and security capabilities.
