Towards a Sign Language Hand Gesture Recognition Design Framework

Casam Njagi Nyaga, Ruth Diko Wario · 2020

Sign language hand gesture recognition enables bridging the communication barrier between the deaf and hearing people. Hence, over the past two decades research in sign language hand gesture recognition has been extensive. However, achieving a robust sign language hand gesture recognition system is still an active research area. Partly this is because there is no outline present to date of this paper that can assist in the design of a sign language recognition systems. Therefore, this paper presents a sign language hand gesture recognition design framework. This framework is evolved using the grounded theory methodology following a rigorous review of literature in hand gesture recognition. The proposed framework is presented in an outline that shows the process that should be followed when designing hand gesture sign language recognition systems. The framework is open for enhancements and serves as a good starting point for researchers and developers of hand gesture recognition systems.
