The quid pro quo of the smart world around us is a set of equally smart challenges. Lack of consumer education is one of the biggest problems. Many Internet of Things (IoT) devices that are flooding the smart market does not consider privacy and security at all. Many home internet-connected devices come from different producers, running on completely different software systems and hardware platforms. To orchestrate the diversity of applications, to make them function properly and to interact with each other and homeowners in a secure and smooth way is a difficult task, but it presents an exciting chance for malicious actors to monetize this raw unprotected data. This is not a hypothetical concern - there are daily reports of attacks. In 2016, there was a well-orchestrated DDoS attack.
