This work considers the control of large-scale composed discrete-event systems which interact via shared events. A multi-level hierarchical control architecture which guarantees hierarchical consistency is elaborated. Moreover, it allows for the composition of decentralized subsystems on the high-level of the hierarchy and hence reduces the computational complexity of the supervisor synthesis for language inclusion specifications. Conditions for nonblocking supervisory control in our hierarchical framework are stated, and algorithms for verifying these conditions are presented based on an automata representation of discrete event systems. The applicability of the approach is illustrated by a manufacturing system case study.
