This paper shows how the VLSI technology influences decisions in the design of a local computer network communication subsystem. The answer to this question is illustrated by the research on communication software carried out under the UMMLAN-2 project. As it has been proved, the use of VLSI controllers for LANs affects in many ways transport layer implementation, i.e., its decomposition into processes, buffer handling strategy, and flow control.
