The aim of this paper is to show the search for an intelligent system for the teacher support in a meaningful teaching-learning process. As application domain, the authors have chosen the field of Computer memory hierarchy. This field has been chosen due to its limited complexity but it is sufficiently general to be learnt in several disciplines with different levels of detail. Moreover, in previous works the authors have implemented a highly configurable simulator for the teaching of this subject. In a first step, an action research process is carried out, looking for an improvement in the teaching process. As outcome, the design of an expert system is proposed, even independent of the domain field. This expert or intelligent system describes the subject to learn from a variation of conceptual map called Pedagogical Concept Instructional Graph, generated by the teacher. After that, the expert system makes use of an adaptive test, generating several questions that deal with those concepts included in the conceptual map with a hierarchical structure. From each student's answers, it can be obtained a personalized conceptual map describing what the student knows a priori about the subject to learn. © 2007 Nova Science Publishers, Inc.
