An Introduction to the Internet of Things

Simon George · 2020

Excluding mobile phones, landlines, laptops, and tablets there were seven billion Internet of Things (IoT) devices (and 17 billion connected devices) at the end of 2018. A complete IoT system integrates four things: sensors - connectivity - data processing - and a user interface. The potential for crimes to be committed via the IoT (or at least made easier) is growing. Smart cameras may provide the homeowner with a live feed of their driveway, but if the camera can be accessed by a burglar they will know when the homeowner is out. Blockchain may provide some of the answers to the security problems faced by the IoT. Hashing is a blockchain technology that can verify an unlimited amount of information using encryption and only 256 characters.
