Message Forwarding and Relay Selection Strategies in Mobile Opportunistic Networks
Mohd Yaseen Mir, Chih‐Lin Hu · 2021
The cost-effectiveness of message delivery in the context of mobile opportunistic networks (MONs) is mainly considered for message forwarding techniques with high successful delivery rate and low traffic overhead. When mobile nodes send messages over transient and sporadic connections between neighbor nodes, the need of appropriate relay selection becomes a significant issue. This chapter presents a brief review of relay selection strategies in the literature and addresses new threads in the recent research. Our particular effort has exploited the use of nodal encounter pattern which is useful in the decision-making process for relay selection in MONs. Some characteristics, like social contacts, contact frequency, strong/weak periodicity and inter-contact time variation which are involved in the contact history, are explained, and their fitness in use for utility measure functions are described. Performance studies are shown to understand the relative performance of different relay node strategies. Finally, several new challenges and future opportunities are discussed.
