The Cloud is becoming very congested owing to the various heterogeneous devices and the wide scope of human machine interactions. Researchers are frequently working on various algorithms to optimize scheduling, cost and time to achieve optimal results. A smart bridge between the devices and cloud can solve the overhead of cloud computing. Fog computing is an emerging concept which solves various problems associated with IoT and Cloud. Fog is an intermediate smart layer in between the data source and cloud infrastructure. The data which must be sent to the cloud for processing and later on for storage has to be analyzed, pre-processed and computed at the fog layer before sending it to the cloud. In this paper we analyze the working concepts of various scheduling algorithms and optimization techniques proposed by the researchers to recommend fog as an alternate solution to ease the burden of cloud. The work has also concentrated on various areas where fog can act as an intelligent broker. The different domains where Fog computing is used, the various techniques or algorithms used to solve the various areas of computing, how the resources are optimized using fog computing paradigms and future scope of research in fog computing are also discussed.
